“What makes a city” is the question that permeates this work. In order to suggest an answer, the artists work with the coined concept of “metromorphosis”, a phenomenon of regeneration, adaptation and evolution of urban centres and metropolises. This is a cumulative result of policies, varying political regimes, development codes and natural restraints combined with the ingenuity of its inhabitants finding loopholes within prescribed laws to fit their aspirations, needs and wants as individuals and as communities.
The city of Mumbai has gone through a series of metromorphoses since the early 90s, changing its form under the pressure of real estate speculation and other economic interests together with the interplay of factors such as permissible FSI (floor space index), TDR (Transferrable developmental rights) and CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone). They are often in conflict with the demands and aspirations of workers, marginalized and indigenous communities, such as the Koli. These interests at struggle manifest as a “complex adaptive system” with sophisticated information processing and patterns.
In this installation, Kulavoor worked in collaboration with production designer and artist, Sandeep Meher – himself belonging to the Koli community – and his team of set designers to construct a sprawling version of a metropolis. Its miniature size ironically highlights the enormous scale and absurdity of metromorphosis in Mumbai, with its multiplicity, complexity, scarcity and density. A particular, almost obsessive attention to details highlights architecture’s problematic relation to identity. The artist attempts a representation of Mumbai’s metabolism, identifying the social, physical, natural and political forces that have informed Mumbai’s urban landscape.

‘एखादे शहर कशातून घडते’ हा प्रश्न या कलाकृतीतून पाझरतो. त्याचे उत्तर सुचविण्यासाठी कलाकार “मेट्रोमॉर्फसिस” या नव्याने मांडलेल्या संकल्पनेवर काम करतात. हा कायापालट म्हणजे धोरणे, विकास कामांसाठीच्या नियमावल्या, त्याला येणाऱ्या नैसर्गिक मर्यादा व त्या जोडीला व्यक्ती आणि समुदाय म्हणून आपल्या आकांक्षा, गरजा आणि इच्छांना जागा करून घेण्यासाठी लिखित नियमांत पळवाटा शोधण्याची इथे राहणाऱ्या माणसांची चलाखी या साऱ्याचा एकत्रित परिपाक आहे.
मुंबई शहर ९०च्या दशकाच्या सुरुवातीपासून मेट्रोमॉर्फसिसच्‍या एका मालिकेलाच सामोरे गेले आहे, रिअल इस्टेटच्या किंमतींविषयी केल्या गेलेल्या भाकितांच्या व इतर आर्थिक हितसंबंधांचे दडपण यांच्यासह FSI (फ्लोअर स्पेस इंडेक्स) ना मिळणारी परवानगी, TDR (ट्रान्स्फरेबल डेव्हलपमेंटल राइट्स) आणि CRZ ( कोस्टल रेग्युलेशन झोन) यांसारख्या घटकांच्या क्रिया प्रतिक्रिया यांनी तिचे रुपडे कायम बदलत राहिले आहे. या बदलांचा बरेचदा इथल्या कामगार, वंचित समाज आणि कोळी समाजासारख्या स्थानिक समुदायांच्या मागण्या आणि आशा-आकांक्षांशी संघर्ष झाला आहे. एकमेकांशी संघर्षाच्या स्थितीत असलेले हे हेतू आधुनिक माहिती प्रक्रिया आणि आकृतीबंधांसह एका ‘व्यामिश्र ग्रहणशील व्यवस्थे’च्या रूपात व्यक्त होतात.
या इन्स्टॉलेशनमध्ये कुलवूर यांनी स्वत: कोळी समुदायातून आलेले प्रोडक्शन डिझायनर आणि आर्टिस्ट संदीप मेहेर व सेट डिझायनर्सच्या टीमसोबत सहयोग साधत महानगराचे सदा गजबजलेले रूप तयार केले आहे. त्याचा मिनिएचर आकार उपरोधिकतेने मुंबईमधील मेट्रोमॉर्फसिसची प्रचंड व्याप्ती आणि त्यातील अॅब्जर्डिटी, गुंतागूंत, कमतरता आणि घनता ठळकपणे अधोरेखित करतो. यात तपशीलांना दिलेले अत्यंत खास, जवळ-जवळ हट्टाग्रही महत्त्व या मांडणीचे स्वत:च्या ओळखीशी असलेले विवादास्पद नाते अधोरेखित करते. कलाकार जणू मुंबईची चयापचय क्रिया प्रातिनिधिक रूपात दाखविण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो व हे करताना मुंबईच्या शहरी भूदृश्याला घडविणाऱ्या सामाजिक, शारीर, नैसर्गिक आणि राजकीय शक्तींचा वेध घेतो.
