A flipbook is probably one of the earliest forms of motion animation which have managed to keep up with time. It’s fun, takes seconds, fits in your pocket and doesn’t need to be charged with power. But behind the tiny books of animation is a long and arduous journey that the creator goes through. “While the animation itself takes anywhere between 10 days to a month, the design and production takes much longer. Then of course the rigours of making a dummy, getting the registration, sequence and crops right and the final production/packaging etc. It is tedious and time consuming, but a joy to see it in the end,” says Sameer Kulavoor, founder of Bombay Duck Designs. The studio has recently launched first two flipbooks of OhFlip, a series of hand-drawn animated action loops commonly seen in Indian street food – Interviewed by KYOORIUS

We’re suckers for anything that comes from the hand of Sameer Kulavoor, the nimble draughtsman who runs design studio Bombay Duck Designs. And with his latest release, a flip book on “Filter Kaapi” he’s given immensely fun form to one of our favourite treats: filter coffee. Thumb through it quick, and you’ll see two arms moving the hot liquid between two containers in fluid motion. Kids, don’t try this at home. – MUMBAI BOSS

A picture of your favourite work created by you? ‘Latest favourite is this image! It is part of a self-published screenprinted book about the phenomenon (excessive use) of Blue Tarps (or taad-patris) in our country. This would be released mid-june. I find it interesting because it covers more than it reveals. But it also reveals all. – KYOORIUS KNOCKS

Can you tell us more about your team and your work process? ‘I have a very hands-on approach to work and the studio philosophy stems from that. The team at any point of time is small (not more than 3 people at a time) and very focused. As and when required, I work with specialized freelancers. The analog approach works well for me. Of course we are not old school and we do use technology/software appropriately. But everything begins with drawing. Unfortunately a lot of design I see these days lack personality and originality’. Some in the indie scene refer to him as “the doctor”. Graphic design, contemporary art and illustration meet to fix any design illness you might have. He prescribed to Something Relevant for their debut album, a wide panoramic detailed drawing with cues from the album, dark humour and references to the city (Bean Bags graffiti and B-grade film posters) and politics. It has captured that general state of chaos and disorientation with a sense of enthusiasm, which is memorable and entertaining. Other music projects include album art for Zero, music videos for Pentagram, identity for Mr. Printer (vocalist Aazin Printer’s solo project), cover design for Rolling Stone India 2013 and branding design for NH7 Weekender Festival 2012 – remember the cool fabric barricading and that awesome festival guide? Apart from the music projects and commercial work, while you are on the BDD website, make sure to browse through Sameer’s personal work – ‘The Ghoda Cycle Project’ – a visual documentation of the variety of bicycles in India. Also, this cycle-obsessed designer is super fun to drink whisky with, if you can drag him away from his desk. Doubles? – BROWN PAPER BAG
